First experience with Forum
Around year 2000 when there is internet connection to every room of my school hostel, i bought a computer and started my internet life. While I’m exploring the net, i registered a free hosting account from Netfirms and installed a forum software, either Ultimate Bulletin Board or Ikonboard which is powered by CGI. Pretty interesting, I setup everything and get it to run. Wow… it works, then i invited some of my friends to join my little community but never get enough active friends there.
I stop that for quite some time, after I graduate, my second forum is a webmaster forum : Singapore WebMaster Forum it run quite well, but I never get serious webmasters in Singapore, a lot of them like kids that trying to create a site and earn quick bucks. It was run on phpBB but is down now as server down and I can’t get back any of the backup from my previous provider. For the pass 1, 2 year, I got another few forums up as well, 1 in vBulletin, 2 started in IPB 1.3.1 but now upgraded to 2+ and a new one started recently, which is on IPB 2.2.
Some of them own by me 100%, some of them I work with partners. There are different priority for different forums, for example the newly joint forum : Malaysia Brides where I merged my own forum with this and hold a small stake in it. The problem of this forum is, too little new traffic, you can see the same old people there all the time, and not many of them posting. Poor registration, new topic and new post stats, although the traffic is considered OK. In average, the percentage of new visitor per day is less than 15%. The forum will never grow like this, as people come and go, the replacing rate is not high enough for the forum to sustain and grow.
My initial task is to work on search engine portion in order to bring in new traffic, 3 months target is to double the new visitor percentage to at least 30%, in return the registration and active members should increase accordingly. But increase by how much is a question mark, as the forum doesn’t have a good management culture in it, very hard for me to implement new things there as a late comer. ** For those who want to run a forum, set a good management culture is very important, it might sound weird, but it is true **. I got a very good culture and team at Malaysian Babes Forum, that’s why we can grow, moderators are mature and helpful, we work as a close team, I really don’t know how can I show my appreciation to them.
Anyway, my first forum attempt and experience is to get a forum up and running as well as have users to participate. However, my current focus is in working on more aspect, including setting the direction, culture, generating balanced traffic, bringing in revenue, etc. Balance traffic is important as PPC traditionally didn’t work well in forum as most of the members are ad-blind, so a correct mixture of traffic from frequently visitors and new visitors is important for the growth of the forum and the revenue.

I found that the ocean photo did not show up in Google Chrome when I viewed the website, it just showed a blank black area.

I was curious if you ever considered changing the structure of your blog? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or 2 pictures. Maybe you could space it out better?
